The Magic Mountain

WHY I'M READING THIS

A friend who rarely recommends anything insisted on this one for two years before I finally listened. I'm three hundred pages in and starting to understand the insistence.

WHAT I UNDERLINED

“"Time has no divisions to mark its passage; there is never a thunderstorm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year."”

WHAT I THINK

It is slower than almost anything I've read recently, and I mean that as the highest compliment I currently have available. It has made me suspicious of my own impatience with long books.

QUESTIONS IT LEFT ME WITH

What does it cost us, exactly, to only read things that move quickly?

WHERE IT LED ME

A slower, more deliberate second draft of the essay I'm currently stuck on.
