The Room We Left

Someone else lives in the flat now.

I know because the curtains changed —

blue instead of the grey

we chose together, badly,

on a Saturday neither of us

remembers the same way.

I walked past on purpose.

I want to be honest about that.

Not to mourn it exactly,

more to check the room

was still standing

without us in it.

It was. Of course it was.

Rooms are very good

at forgetting who furnished them.

It's only people

who keep the inventory,

long after the lease has ended.

READING NOTES

On walking past a former home. The line about the inventory took eleven drafts to get right, and I'm still not sure it's right.
