I think the essay isn't working because I still don't know what I actually believe about the question underneath it. You can't structure your way out of that. No amount of outlining fixes an essay whose author hasn't finished thinking. The honest move, tonight, is to stop drafting the essay and start drafting the belief instead — freewrite the actual opinion, badly, in private, until I know what the good version is supposed to defend.
